Bhandup Tembipada Ganpati

This Ganpati just refused to leave

About 300 people at a Bhandup mandal failed to move the 22-ft idol

A Bhandup mandal could not immerse their 22-feet Ganesh idol after members failed to lift it for immersion.
Extra volunteers were called in but even that did not help. Interestingly, there was no such problem when the idol was brought there.

It was only after a priest was summoned and a corrective ritual performed, that the unique idol - made of 251 replicas of Ganesh, showed signs of moving. Now the idol will be immersed on Sankashti which falls on Sunday.

Bhandup Tembipada Ganpati
Bhandup mandal’s Ganesh idol is unique with 251 replicas of Ganesh and weighs 3 tonnes Residents of Tembipada in Bhandup were all in high spirits to bid adieu to their deity on Wednesday.
After the final pooja and offerings before the immersion volunteers tried to lift the Ganapati idol, but it simply did not move. More and more volunteers were called in to add muscle, but to no avail.
“It was our golden jubilee year so we had decided to come up with something different. We had asked the artist to make the idol of Sarveshwar Mahaganapati.

The Ganesh idol is unique with 251 replicas of Ganesh and weighs three tonnes,” said Sunil Joshi, president of the mandal.
“After two and half hours of futile exercise by more than 250 people, our mandal members called in additional 40 paid labourers to lift the idol. Shockingly, even they were of no help.
Our members then decided to lift the idol with the help of a trolley, but even then it did not move,” narrated Sunil More, general secretary of the mandal.

Panic and fear gripped the organisers who were convinced they must have done something wrong to displease their Lord. “We summoned the priest for a consultation. He heard us out and suggested that we perform another ritual to appease the God and for peace,” said Joshi.

According to Joshi, “The priest also explained that the God was probably showing his displeasure over the way the pooja had been performed.

“Hence the idol did not move and that we must respect the will of God and not try to move the idol forcefully. It could also result in cracks and hurt the sentiments of devotees.”

“After shanti pooja the idol can be immersed on Sankashti even if it falls in pitru paksha,” said Shankar Jangam, the priest.
